Bryan Murray opens the 2021 Venice Biennale in Saariaho’s Only The Sound Remains

Baritone Bryan Murray sings the roles Priest & Fisherman in Kaija Saariaho’s Only The Sound Remains at the Venice Biennale on September 17th, 2021.

The conductor is Clement Mao-Takacs and director Aleksi Barriere. This is a co-production between between La Biennale di Venezia, Tokio Bunka Kaikan, Palau de la Musica, Tampere Hall.

The production will see it’s first performance, at the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan concert hall in Tokyo, on Sunday, June 6th, 2021.

Only The Sound Remains (2015) is based on two Japanese theatre plays, which have been used in the libretto as English translations by Ezra Pound and Ernest Fenollosa. The two acts are titled “Always Strong” and “Feather Mantel”, and features only two singers - a countertenor and a baritone.
