Biography

Eldrid Gorset is a soprano from the Norwegian mountains, now based in Oslo. She is an artist with a strong and heartfelt presence, and her background in dance and theatre is easily recognised in her character interpretations, which range from witty soprano roles to tender art songs.

Recent highlights include Eurydice in Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld at The Norwegian Opera & Ballet, the title role in Kraus’ Proserpin with Vaasa Baroque, which marked her Finnish debut, and Abele in Leonardo Leo’s La morte di Abele at Festival Retz in Austria.

In the Spring of 2023 she made an outstanding last-minute jump-in as Despina at the première of the Norwegian Opera’s new Così fan tutte — on just one day’s notice — to excellent reviews.

In 2022, she was invited with Olga Jørgensen to perform Poulenc’s La Voix Humaine at the Troldhaugen concert venue in Bergen, with great success.

During the 2021/22 and 2022/23 seasons, Eldrid was a member of the Young Artist Ensemble of the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen. She made her house debut as Musetta¨La bohème in autumn 2021, followed by Zerlina Don Giovanni. In the 2022/23 season she sang Clorinda in Stefan Herheim’s acclaimed La Cenerentola, Frasquita in Barry Kosky’s Carmen, and Despina in Tim Albery’s Così fan tutte on a large Denmark tour.

Earlier performances include the world premiere of Flagstad – an Opera (spring 2021), Nannetta Falstaff and Gretel Hänsel und Gretel with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra (KORK) at the Norwegian Opera, Susanna Le nozze di Figaro, as well as several opera tours across Norway and Southern Sweden.

As part of Oslo’s emerging opera scene, she co-founded the company Skeive Stemmer, which in 2023 became the first Norwegian company to perform at the Grimeborn Festival at the Arcola Theatre, London.

Eldrid is also a highly sought-after concert singer, with a special love for the works of Händel, Bach and Haydn.

She has sung soprano solo in Carmina Burana with conductor Philip Faber, at Musikkhuset in Esbjerg (2024), and Handel’s Messiah with Trondheimsolistene at Nidaros Cathedral (2024). In Summer 2023 she was soloist at the opening of The Norwegian Chamber Festival, in Mendelssohn’s Midsummer Night’s Dream, with Allegria Orchestra, the Norwegian Soloist Choir and conductor Grete Pedersen. She also appeared with ensembles and orchestras such as Cæciliaforeningen, USO, Oslo Chamber Orchestra, Lillehammer Orchestra and Bærum Orchestra.

She graduated in spring 2020 from the Opera Academy in Oslo. Prior to this, she studied classical singing at the Barratt Due Institute of Music and the Norwegian Academy of Music (Bachelor). Before embarking on a classical path, she studied musical theatre at the Performing Arts School in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Reviews

“…the prodigious talent Eldrid Gorset…”

Absolutely magnificent is the prodigious talent Eldrid Gorset as the delightful vixen Zerlina, who, even here, at her own wedding, cannot resist Don Juan’s seductive flattery. She herself is damn hard to resist, I must add in Don’s defense.

“Most respectfully the hat must be tipped to…”

But most respectfully, the hat must be tipped to Eldrid Gorset (Despina), who, indeed, has performed the role in Copenhagen this season, and who jumped in on one day’s notice without showing any noticeable signs of it.
